No. 19 Johns Hopkins Takes ALC Tilt with No. 13 Ohio State

BALTIMORE, MD - On a day where Johns Hopkins honored its nine seniors, it was that class that led the Blue Jays to a 12-9 win over 13th-ranked Ohio State in both teams' regular season finale. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Hopkins as JHU heads into next week's ALC Tournament with an 8-8 overall record. The Buckeyes drop just their fifth game of the season as they slip to 10-5.

The Blue Jays' seniors accounted for 10 of the team's 12 goals and 13 of 18 total points. Senior Candace Rossi led the way with a game-high four goals, while classmate Rachel Ballatori had two goals to go with a pair of assists.

Ohio State looked to be in control early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10:06 of the game. Gabby Capuzzi sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Katie Chase to stake the Buckeyes to a 3-0 lead in the game's first seven minutes. From left goal line extended, Jackie Cifarelli found a streaking Cara Facchina for a man-up goal at 19:54 to push Ohio State's lead to four.

Hopkins finally got on the scoreboard at 13:52 when senior Colleen McCaffrey took an over the cage pass from sophomore Taylor D'Amore in the slot and buried it to ignite a 10-1 Hopkins run that spanned the next 28 minutes. Less than two minutes later, senior Rachel Ballatori slipped a pass to classmate Rachel Serio, who was charging down the alley and bounced a shot past Tori DeScenza to cut the deficit in half. Rossi capped a quick three-goal spurt for the Blue Jays on a strike off a hard dodge down the right alley at 8:07.

Alayna Markwordt pushed Ohio State's lead back to two just 18 seconds later, capitalizing on a failed Hopkins' clear. She scooped up a loose ball and with junior goalie Cosette Larash out of position, fired into the open cage to make it a 5-3 game. Hopkins would have the final say of the half however, as Rossi scored a pair of goals in the final six minutes to send the teams into the half tied at five goals apiece. Rossi made it a 5-4 game when she dodged from behind the cage, cut inside her defender and snuck a low shot inside the far post at 5:59. She then capped the first half scoring, and her sixth hat trick of the season, with an unassisted tally with just 12 seconds to play. Hopkins picked up right where it left off in the second half, scoring the first five goals of the stanza to push out to a 10-5 lead with 16:02 to play. McCaffrey got the second-half scoring going with a free position goal at 28:24 to give Hopkins its first lead of the game. Sophomore Sammy Cermack then scored on a great hustle play 88 seconds later to make it 7-5 Blue Jays. Rossi rung a shot off the right post and the ball kicked out to Cermack, who scooped it up, cradled once and scored. A great defensive play led to the next Blue Jay goal as junior Courtney Schweizer picked up off a Buckeye pass and went end-to-end with the ball. McCaffrey would then find D'Amore open on the left side, where she caught and quickly shot for her only goal of the game.

Serio pushed the lead to four when she dodged from the top of the fan and blew a shot over the right shoulder of DeScenza at 16:47. Ballatori capped the run just 45 seconds later with her first of the afternoon. D'Amore drew three defenders in the high slot before dumping the ball down low to Ballatori on the post. She faked and then went low on DeScenza were it just slipped over the goal line to give Hopkins a 10-5 advantage.

Ohio State ended the Hopkins run with a 4-1 burst to make it a two-goal game with 5:51 to play. Chase put the Buckeyes on the board for the first time in the half with a free position goal at 14:23. The goal ended a scoreless drought of 23:26 for the visitors. Ballatori got that one back for the Blue Jays after some very unselfish play by her teammates. Larash made a stop on a Capuzzi free position shot and senior Monica D'Ambrogi came up with the ground ball to sparked the Jays' transition. Some tic-tac-toe passing ended with McCaffrey to D'Amore to a wide-open Ballatori on the left post for the easy score.
