Purple Knights' Rally Falls Just Short in NE-10 Loss at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Saint Michael's fell short of erasing a six-goal deficit in the second half during an eventual 13-10 setback against American International (AIC) on Saturday at Abdow Field. The Purple Knights are now 3-12 overall and 1-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-13 and 2-10.

Freshmen Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) tied a career-high with three goals for the Purple Knights, while classmates Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) each netted two markers apiece, with Piper adding an assist. Seniors Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Meghan Hayes (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and sophomore Shannon Murphy (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional/UMass) each contributed a goal.

Scoba tied Lauren Piekarski '05 for the sixth most goals in program history with 101. Junior Caitlin Mahoney (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) scooped up four ground balls, caused three turnovers and had four draw controls, while senior Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 12 saves for a Saint Michael's squad that held a 21-14 edge in ground balls and held the Yellow Jackets to 1 of 11 on free-position shots.

Senior Ashleigh Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) led the Yellow Jackets with six goals, while two players scored twice and three tallied one apiece. Sophomore Nicole Sawula (Hatfield, Mass./Northampton) stopped eight shots.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead 1:29 into the opening half, before Scoba scored at 26:11. AIC scored six out of the next seven goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead with 11:40 remaining in the half, but Piper cut the deficit to five just 33 seconds later. Boyer struck with 52 second left in the half to bring it back to a five-goal game, after AIC pushed the lead to six at 8:01.

The two squads traded goals in the opening 14:48 of the second half with Piper and Murphy responding to AIC goals at 24:51 and 15:12, respectively. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in less than three minutes to take a 13-6 lead at 11:37, but the Purple Knights kept them off the board the rest of the game and scored the last four goals in the final 8:34. Jaskiewicz tallied two of the final four markers with Boyer and Hayes netting the other two.

The Purple Knights wrap up their regular-season and celebrate Senior Day tomorrow against Queens College (N.Y.) at 12:00 p.m..
