Hartwick Staves off Comeback to Edge Alfred

ALFRED, NY - Hartwick got out to an early 4-0 and host Alfred came back in the second half but their comeback fell short as Hartwick walked away with a 10-9 victory on Saturday afternoon. Hartwick ends the season with a final record of 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the Empire 8 while Alfred finishes with a final record of 4-11 and 1-6 in the Empire 8.

Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) both had three goals to lead the Hawks. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) added two goals while Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) and Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) both chipped in one goal each. Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had a game-high three assists. Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) secured six groundballs while James Curcio (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) caused four turnovers.

Stefan Dabrowski scored three goals to lead the Saxons. Ben Demarco had two goals. Brendan Murphy, Jay Whyel, Riley Kinnane, and Brett Carroll all scored once.

Hartwick scored four unanswered goals to open the contest, including a pair of goals from Hughes. DeMarco got AU on the board with just 18 seconds left in the first quarter and trimmed the Hawks lead to 4-1 heading into the second quarter.

It was all Alfred in the second quarter as the Saxons outscored Hartwick 3-1 and the Hawks held a slim 5-4 advantage going into halftime

The Hawks struck first in the second half increasing their lead to 6-4 with 13:56 remaining in the third quarter. Each team would notch 3 more goals in the quarter and 'Wick led 9-7 going into the final quarter of play.

The Hawks found the net first with 6:32 remaining in the contest on a goal by Dupuy to go up 10-7. Alfred answered Hartwick's goal as Kinnane found the net to make it 10-8. Carroll brought the Saxons to within one with 34 seconds left in the game. The Hawks would have possession with 12 seconds on the clock but turned over the ball to give Alfred a chance to tie the game. After a successful clear attempt, Kinnane's shot hit the post and Hartwick would come away with the win

Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St John's Prep) started in goal for the Hawks and stopped 10 shots. Cody O'Connor had nine saves in goal for the Saxons.

For the game, Alfred outshot Hartwick 34-31 while Hartwick held an advantage in groundballs, 34-25.
