#8 Denison Makes Short Work of Saint Vincent

The eighth-ranked Denison Big Red put the finishing touches on its finest regular season in 45 years, following a 19-5 victory over Saint Vincent on Senior Day from Granville, Ohio. The win moves Denison's record to 13-1, marking the first one-loss regular season by a DU men's lacrosse team since 1968.

DU made short work of the visiting Bearcats, outscoring them 5-0 in the first quarter and 4-2 in the second, to take a 9-2 lead into the intermission. Sophomore attack Eddie Vita scored two of his game-high four goals in the first half. His second goal came in an extra-man situation off a pass from Alex Hardt. Vita leads the team with 38 goals scored while 11 of them have come with the man-up unit.

In the first half, Denison forced the bearcats into 16 turnovers and a 40 percent clearing percentage. In the third quarter, the Bearcats responded by winning 7 of 10 face-off's and they turned that into three goals. DU would counter with six goals in the third and a shutout fourth quarter which saw the Big Red reserves put on an impressive display at both ends of the field.

In the scoring department, Zach Walsh followed Vita with three goals while Chapin Speidel and Cory Couture each posted two goals and two assists. Senior middie Davis Lukens scored twice and added one assist while rookie Teddy Powell scored once while chipping in two assists.

The Big Red gathered 51 ground balls and was led by defenseman Tommy Harrison with six. Senior defensive midfielder Mark Stanton posted five ground balls and Lukens also chipped in five. Three of Harrison's six ground balls came via caused turnovers. Senior All-American defenseman Nick Farrell also posted two caused turnovers that resulted in two ground balls.

Face-off man Chip Phillips was 11 for 23 and Nick Petracca got the win in goal, playing 38 minutes and contributing four saves. Senior Gregg Shannon played the final 22 minutes and tallied six saves.

Saint Vincent was led by Nick Pensyl's two goals. They were outshot 47-24 but held a 16-12 advantage in face-offs. The Big Red was 3 for 5 in man-up situations while the Bearcats were 0 for 3.

Prior to the start of the game Denison honored its 11-member senior class and their families. They are Couture, Farrell, Hardt, Chris Kozlowski, Lukens, Shannon, Stanton, Madden Titus, Matt Verklin, Jake Vita, and Walsh. They have won 48 career games to go along with three North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Denison's last one-loss regular season came in 1968 under then third-year head coach Tommy Thomsen. Thomsen passed away in January and this season has been dedicated to his memory. Each member of the squad displays a "TT" on the back of their helmet in tribute to his legacy.
