Second-Half Fredonia Run Downs Oswego

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Danielle Citro (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) tied the game early in the second half, but Oswego State (4-9, 0-7 SUNYAC) faltered down the stretch in a 20-13 loss to host Fredonia (14-3, 7-1 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers raced out of the blocks to a three-goal lead courtesy of goals from Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.), Erin Cummings (Sr., Valley Cottage, N.Y.), and Rachael Raffa (Sr., Kings Park, N.Y.) in the first five minutes. Morgan McNamara scored two of her game-high eight goals to stop the momentum, but the Oswego State lead swelled to two goals again after the second of three goals from Cummings' stick near the midway point of the first half.

Just over a minute later, Katie Kleine triggered a 5-0 Blue Devil run to put Fredonia in front, 7-4, with six minutes left in the frame. Oswego State countered with a pair of Citro markers and another Cummings goal to even the score, but McNamara found the back of the cage with 30 seconds left on the clock to give the Blue Devils a slim, one-goal lead at the break.

Citro leveled the score under two minutes into the second stanza before Fredonia answered with four straight goals over the next three minutes. Stephanie Cronk and Raffa tallied two of the next three goals to make it a three-goal deficit, but the Blue Devils distanced themselves by scoring five goals to go ahead, 18-10.

Raffa found the back of the cage with two goals and a free-position goal by Kaila Curatalo (So., Rochester, N.Y.) before Fredonia's Amy Simon closed out the contest with a pair of markers.

Ashlee Engel (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) registered 14 saves in goal to go along with a team-high six ground balls for the Lakers, while Casey Chiesa ended up with five saves for the opposition.

Raffa paced Oswego State with six draw controls, while Megan Mietelski led Fredonia with ten draw controls.

The Lakers play their final game of the season on Monday at Geneseo for a 4:00 p.m. start.
