Manhattanville Ends Season with Thrilling OT Win vs. King's

PURCHASE, N.Y. Manhattanville picked up their second straight Freedom Conference victory to end the season on a two game winning streak with a 10-9 overtime victory over the King's (Pa.) Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y.

Manhattanville scored three times in the final 8:07 of regulation to tie the game before junior Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) netted the game-winner on the first possession of overtime.

Prior to the game Manhattanville honored their two graduating seniors Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Phil Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas), as both played their final games in Valiant uniforms on Saturday afternoon. Honovich made his return to the field for only a few seconds after suffering a season-ending arm injury two weeks earlier against Misericordia.

King's got on the board first with a goal just two minutes into the game as A.J Bungert put the Monarchs up 1-0. The Valiants took their first lead of the game with a pair of goals during the next seven minutes as sophomore Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and freshman Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) put the home team up 2-1. King's came back with two goals in the final 71 seconds of the opening period to take a 3-2 lead into the first break.

Starting off the second quarter, the Monarchs scored the next two goals and opened up a 5-2 lead, but Daly stopped the four goal run with a man-up goal. King's scored the next goal at 7:04 to open up their three goal cushion once again, but Kuntz scored his second of the afternoon to bring the game back to two. The Monarchs scored once more in the half to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was very low scoring compared to the first two as Daly scored his second of the afternoon and tenth of the season just 22 seconds into the period, while with just under four minutes to go the Monarchs gained their three goal lead for the fourth time on the afternoon.

The fourth quarter saw the Valiants control much of the offensive play scoring four of the final quarter's five goals. The first came out of the stick of Conor Reeves (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee), but King's answered right back and took their three goal lead back once again at 9-6 on Kevin Sweeney's third goal of the afternoon.

Junior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) added his first of the game with 8:07 to go on a man-up situation after taking a pass from Kuntz. The next goal turned out to be from Kuntz who matched Sweeney with his third goal of the afternoon to pull the Valiants within one at 9-8 with 6:34 remaining.

The Valiants got a man-up situation on an illegal body check taken by King's and the Valiants capitalized by tying the game as freshman Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) netted his 11th goal of the year off of a pass from Figueroa. With the game tied, the Monarchs took a slashing penalty with nine seconds to go that carried over into the overtime period.

Without the need for a faceoff with the penalty carrying over from regulation, the Valiants started off with the ball. Manhattanville scored 56 seconds into the overtime period as Figueroa took a pass from Kuntz to give Manhattanville the 10-9 victory in their third-straight overtime contest against King's.

In goal junior Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) stopped 10 shots while allowing nine Monarch goals and finishes the season with a 4-10 record, on the opposite end of the field Brendan McCruden allowed 10 goals while stopping 15 shots taken by the Valiants.

Manhattanville finishes the season with a 4-11 overall record and a 2-3 record in the Freedom Conference under first year head coach Kevin Warnock. Meanwhile, King's finishes the regular season with a 7-7 overall record and a 3-2 record in league play while clinching the No. 2 seed in the Freedom Conference Championship and will play in the semifinals against No. 3 seeded FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon.
