No. 1 Sea Gulls Rout York, Capture 10th Straight CAC Crown

SALISBURY, Md. No. 1 Salisbury claimed its 10th consecutive Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 17-5 win over No. 11 York (Pa.) College Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. With the win, the Sea Gulls receive the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament.

Junior Katie Bollhorst led the Salisbury (18-0) attack with a game-high six points, netting four goals and dishing out two assists.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early lead on a goal by senior Amanda Holsclaw. Jenna Hiponia put York (15-3) on the board at the 24:55 mark in the first half. Bollhorst answered with a goal to put Salisbury up 2-1 just 1:08 later. Junior Kara Koolage added a goal 25 seconds after Bollhorst's goal to make it 3-1, before Erica Mulford answered for the Spartans with 20:02 remaining in the first half.

At the 12:58 mark, freshman Bethany Baer netted a free-position goal for the Sea Gulls, making the score 4-2. After Hiponia's second goal two minutes later, the score sat at 4-3. A save on a York free-position shot by sophomore goalie Ashton Wheatley with 14 seconds remaining in the first half kept it a one-goal lead for the Sea Gulls heading into halftime.

The statsheet was similar to the scoreboard in the first half. Salisbury collected one more ground ball, but had two fewer shots than the Spartans.

The second half was a different game, as the pace quickened and points were posted at a furious rate. Salisbury outscored the Spartans 13-2 in the second half.

Holsclaw netted her second goal of the game just 61 seconds into the second half to widen the Sea Gull lead to 5-3. Bollhorst added her second goal of the game on a free-position shot to make it 6-3. A goal moments later by senior Allie Wheatley made the score 7-3 and the Sea Gulls never looked back.

Starting with Holsclaw's goal, Salisbury went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 13-4 lead with 14:57 remaining in the game.

Ashton Wheatley stopped six Spartan shots to pick up the win in the cage for the Sea Gulls.

Hiponia led York with her two goals.

The win extends the Sea Gulls' CAC winning streak to 87 games.

The Sea Gulls have one final regular season match-up remaining, heading to Newport News, Va., next Saturday, May 5 to take on Christopher Newport University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
