#16 Fairfield Defeats #18 Ohio State in the ECAC Semifinals

The Buckeyes (8-7, 5-1 ECAC) trailed 5-1 at the end of the first quarter before shutting out Fairfield and scoring two goals of their own in the second half for a 5-3 game at halftime. The Buckeyes drew within one (5-4) early in the third quarter but the Stags responded with two goals to gain a three-goal edge (7-4) after 45 minutes. Ohio State scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 7-all but Fairfield's Sam Snow broke the tie with 2:49 remaining in regulation and the goal stood as the gamewinner.

Against Fairfield, freshmen Jesse King and David Planning and sophomore Adam Trombley each scored twice for the Buckeyes, with King adding an assist for a three-point game. Junior Logan Schuss had a goal and an assist for two points. Sophomore Shawn Kaplan won 11 faceoffs for Ohio State. Senior Joe Bonanni and Keenan Ochwat each caused two turnovers vs. the Stags.

Ohio State opened the scoring at 10:41 of the first quarter on a goal by King but the Stags tied the game just nine seconds later when Michael Roe scored after winning the ensuing faceoff. Fairfield scored the next four goals, leading 5-1 at the end of the quarter. Drew Federico tallied at 7:18, with Snow tallying less than a minute later (6:15). John Snellman made the score 4-1 at 2:05 and the final goal came from Snow with nine seconds remaining. The Stags outshot Ohio State, 10-6, in the quarter.

Ohio State scored the only two goals in the second quarter. With Ohio State on a man-up chance, Schuss found King at the top of the crease for a goal at 8:05. King set up a goal from Planning with 55 seconds left in the quarter for a 5-3 Fairfield lead at halftime. The Buckeyes outshot Fairfield, 8-6, in the quarter.

Ohio State scored the first goal of the third quarter to draw within one (5-4), with Trombley scoring unassisted at 12:33. The Stags' Snellman scored back-to-back at 8:23 and 4:28 to push the lead back to three (7-4). Snellman's first goal ended a scoreless streak of 21:49 for Fairfield. Shots were 11-7 in favor of the Stags in the quarter.

Trombley added his second goal of the game just 27 seconds into the fourth quarter, taking a pass from junior Kevin Mack on a fast break. Planning scored unassisted at 9:14, making it a 7-6 game and Schuss tied the game with a tally at 7:50, assisted by junior Nick Liddil. Snow's gamewinner came with 2:49 remaining and was assisted by Colin McLinden. Each team had eight shots in the quarter.

Ohio State was outshot, 35-29, in the game. Buckeye sophomore Greg Dutton had eight saves, with Fairfield's Charlie Cipriano making 14 stops.

Fairfield had the edge in groundballs (28-14), with Ohio State winning 11 of 19 faceoffs. Alexander led the Buckeyes with four groundballs, with Trombley and Kaplan each picking up three.

The 2012 NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 9:00 p.m. Sunday. Ohio State will wait to see if it receives an at-large berth.
