No. 2 Syracuse Holds off No. 16 Georgetown in Big East Semis
SU evened the score at 5:55, but once again the Hoyas took the lead as graduate student attacker Kristen Coleman (Potomac, Md./Holy Cross) fired in the free position at 2:51 to make it 4-3 which would stand at the half.
Syracuse opened the second half with its own 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game and go ahead by two, 6-4.
The Blue & Gray ended the scoring drought at 14:58 as junior midfielder Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) connected to pull the Hoyas within one.
Syracuse gained possession and began to stall as the Hoyas allowed the high-power offense to sit back. After a six-minute Orange stall, junior defender Ashley Hunter (Fort Washington, Md./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) caused a turnover and raced down the field. However, the possession was short lived as Syracuse tallied a caused a turnover to take it back.
Syracuse moved ahead by two with a score at 2:59, but Georgetown didn't back down as junior attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) made it a one-goal game on a free position shot at 1:24.
In the final minute, the Hoyas had two solid looks at the cage. However, the Blue & Gray couldn't find the tying goal eventually falling, 7-6.
Tarzian led the way for Georgetown with two goals. On defense Hunter had a good game with four ground balls and a caused turnover.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) posted six saves.
Georgetown is currently 9-8 overall and ranked in both national polls. The Hoyas will wait to see if the team receives an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. The selection is scheduled for Sunday evening at 9:00 p.m. It will be available on the NCAA.com web site.
