Sennett Leads #2 Le Moyne by Saint Michael's in NE-10 Semis
Sophomore Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made 10 saves for Saint Michael's, limiting the sixth-ranked scoring offense (12.27) in Division II. Senior Peter Hanson (Andover, Mass./Andover) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while junior Neil Kelly (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) caused a trio of turnovers. A year after setting a school record with a 6.60 goals-against average, DeMairo bettered the mark by completing this year at 6.04.
Junior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) and sophomore Tim McDonald (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each scored twice on the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation (3.87). Donnally finished the season with 43 goals, tying for the second-best showing in program history, and enters his senior year needing 13 markers to tie the school's career mark of 109.
Graduate student Tyler Sennett (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) scored three times for Le Moyne, while senior Nick Blumer (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Hobart) and sophomore Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) had two goals each. Junior Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius HS), the national leader in GAA who stands second in save percentage, made nine stops.
Le Moyne scored four of its goals in the first 16:11 of the game while blanking the Purple Knights until the second quarter. Sennett tallied 2:31 after the opening draw, and Button netted a pair during a 4:22 stretch for a 3-0 advantage.
The Dolphins grabbed a four-goal cushion 1:11 into the second quarter, but Donnally got his team on the board 1:47 later, juking White on the doorstep for his 42nd goal. Late in the half, McDonald cut toward the net, snagging a pass from senior Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) and bringing his team within 4-2 with 29 seconds left.
The Dolphins tallied twice more in a 3:43 stretch of the third quarter, holding the visitors scoreless, before Sennett scored again at 11:57 of the fourth to create a 7-2 cushion. Zuccarini hit the crossbar 30 seconds later before Donnally found the back of the net soon thereafter, making it a four-goal game at 10:56. Senior Paul Tortora Jr. (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) assisted.
However, Sennett completed his hat trick at 6:58 to make it a five-goal contest. McDonald's goal with 32 seconds left created the final margin.
