Longwood Ends Season with NLC Victory over Howard

DAVIDSON, N.C. Longwood, the #5 seed, ended its 2012 women's lacrosse season with a 25-14 neutral-site win past #8 Howard University in a National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) Tournament consolation match Saturday morning.

Sophomore Lauren Prasnicki|Lexington (Rockbridge County) had a career day with her 10-point effort on four goals and six assists. The Lancers end their season with a 4-13 overall record while 3-4 in the NLC.

As a team, Longwood set season-high marks for goals (25), shots (46), draw controls (27) and free position goals (nine), including committing a season-low 13 turnovers.

Longwood opened the game with three goals before Howard got on the board at 27:45 that started a 4-1 run to tie the game at 4-4. The Lancers responded with three in a row to take a 7-4 lead, which they never relinquished for the remaining 18:28 of the half and through the second period.

After the Bison scored two more to pull within one goal at 7-6 with 16:40 on the clock, Longwood pushed for its final multi-goal run starting at 15:58 and ending at 7:28 to double its lead to 12-6. The half ended with a 14-10 intermission score via four goals from senior captain Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester East) and three from fellow captain and classmate Hannah Riggs|Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie) as well as sophomore Mary Barondess|Centreville (Westfield).

Prasnicki, junior Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel), freshman Sara Jacobson|Gainesville (Battlefield) and redshirt-freshman Alexa Anderson|Richmond (St. Catherine's) all added one goal apiece in the period.

After a high-scoring first half with a combined 24 goals, the second half had just 15 as Longwood netted 11. The Lancers got things rolling with another three-straight goals at the start from Anderson, senior captain Sam Stifler|Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford) and Prasnicki, respectively, and Howard pulled within six at 26:21 for a 17-11 mark.

After eight more combined goals, the Lancers then closed out the game with four more unanswered goals, ending at 8:56, as neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the match.

Freshman Christian Acker|Moorestown, N.J. (Moorestown) got her first start and played her first full game in goal, making six saves in each half. Prasnicki was the offensive leader with her four goals and six assists, and Rudloff added four goals and three assists for seven points. Anderson netted three goals and one assist, while Brentlinger ended with two goals and one assist.

Stifler scored two, and junior Stephanie Schenkel|Brentwood, Tenn. (Ravenwood) netted one. Jacobson finished one goal in each half, and freshman Brittany Haun|Charlottesville (Monticello) scored her first collegiate goal on two shots, also collecting one ground ball. Along with her three goals, Riggs also collected a game-high seven draw controls and four ground balls.
