No. 20 Gettysburg Downs OWU in NCAA First Round

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Freshman Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored four goals, including the first three of the game, and Gettysburg used a fast start to get past Ohio Wesleyan, 7-4, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

With the win, the 20th-ranked Bullets (11-6) advanced to the second round of the tournament and on Saturday will play the winner of Wednesday night's first-round game between fifth-ranked Stevenson University and Birmingham Southern College.

Junior Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) tied a career-high with three points on one goal and two assists for Gettysburg, which led 4-0 early in the second quarter, while sophomore Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Derek Ruebling (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) dished out two assists.

Defensively, junior long-stick midfielder Ian Casella (Washington, Mass./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) had three caused turnovers while sophomore Jon Maddalone (Newtown, Pa./Choate Rosemary Hall [Conn.]) made seven saves. Junior Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./The Bullis School) won 7 of 13 face-offs and was 4 for 4 at the X in the decisive first quarter, in which the Bullets outshot the Battling Bishops 19-4.

Junior Pat Bassett and sophomore Spencer Schnell scored two goals apiece for Ohio Wesleyan (11-5) while Ryan McMahon made 11 saves.

The two teams were whistled for a combined 14 penalties adding up to 12:30. Gettysburg was 5 for 6 on the ride and cashed in on a season-high three of its seven extra-man opportunities.

The Bullets hounded McMahon right from the start and held an 8-1 shot advantage six minutes into the game. McMahon made six of his saves in the opening quarter, but Maddux finally broke through for the Bullets when he converted a feed from Manilla with 8:39 left.

Maddux struck just over two minutes later, this time off a dish from Thomas, then finished off a fast break with 1:44 remaining to record his fourth hat trick of the season. Senior Matt McMurray (Orangeville, Ont./Hill Academy) created the offense for the Bullets at the defensive end, recovering an Ohio Wesleyan turnover before racing downfield and finding Maddux as Gettysburg led 3-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Bullets capitalized on their second EMO with 13:36 left in the first half, when Manilla scored off a Ruebling pass to make it 4-0. The Bishops closed the period on a 2-1 run to close to within 5-2 at halftime, as Basset and Schnell sandwiched a pair of goals around a Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) tally at the 9:27 mark.

Gettysburg traded a goal with OWU in each of the final two quarters, with three of the four goals coming in man-up situations. Maddux finished off his four-goal day with 12:17 left when he scored man-up off a Thomas pass before Schnell struck again also in an EMO with 7:14 to go, making it 6-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Thomas got into the scoring act with 13:02 remaining when he cashed in on Ruebling's second assist of the game and the Bullets third man-up tally. Basssett set the final score with a goal at the 7:29 mark.
