No. 7 RIT Routs New England College in NCAA First Round

ROCHESTER, NY -- No. 7 RIT (15-2) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship with an 18-4 win over New England College (12-7) on Wednesday afternoon at RIT Stadium. The Tigers advance to face Western New England on Saturday, May 12 at RIT. WNE defeated Connecticut College 6-5 in double overtime.

The 18 goals on Wednesday was the most goals scored in a NCAA Tournament game in RIT history. The four goals allowed ties the record for fewest goals allowed in a tournament game, and the 14-goal win is the largest margin of victory in a NCAA Tournament game in RIT lacrosse history.

"I thought it was good team win for us," said RIT Head Coach Jake Coon. "We came out and played as a team right from the opening whistle."

Senior Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) led RIT with five points on three goals and two assists. Ryan Speciale (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) tallied four points on two goals and two assists, and Tom Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) had three points on two goals and an assist. Alex Crepinsek (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) each had two goals and Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) had a pair of assists.

James Putney scored three of NEC's four goals on the afternoon. Nick Acquaviva took the loss for the Pilgrim, allowing 18 goals and making 14 saves.

RIT held a 48-23 shot advantage, and won the ground ball battle 43-31. The Tigers were 17 of 20 on clearing attempts, while holding NEC to 14 of 24. The Pilgrims went 0 for 4 on the man-up.

RIT won 17 of 26 faceoffs, led by Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) who went 11 of 13 on the day and had five ground balls.

RIT's defense was stifling on Wednesday, causing 14 turnovers. Eric Horeth (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Elliott Cowburn and Crepinsek each had a pair of caused turnovers to lead RIT. (Fairport, NY/Fairport)Anthony DeLeo# picked up his 14th win of the season, allowing four goals and making five saves.

RIT opened the game scoring the first four goals of the contest. Crepinsek scored the Tigers first two goals, with Speciale and Russell each adding one.

After a James Putney goal made it 4-1 RIT after one period, the Tigers rattled off six straight goals in the second quarter to break it open, leading 10-2 at the half. MacDonald, Riley, Russell, and Speciale each had goals in that run, and Collins-Hartwig had a pair.

Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf), Riley and Tingle opened the second half with goals, extending the Tigers lead to 13-2.

After another Putney goal cut the lRIT ead to 13-3, goals by Pat McMullan (Easton, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and Tingle extended the lead to 15-3.

Russell, Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) and Cory Ashmore (Sutton, Ontario/Sutton District) each scored in the fourth quarter for the Tigers to make it an 18-4 final The goal by Ashmore was the first of his collegiate career.

RIT is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third straight. Last season, the Tigers made to the national semifinals, losing to Tufts, 16-12.

Saturday's game versus Western New England University will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
