Westminster Tops St. Mary's to Reach Quarterfinals
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Westminster College defeated St. Mary's (Calif.) 12-6 on Monday in the first round of the 2012 MCLA National Championships.
Westminster improves to 16-3 overall this season and win for the sixth time in their last seven outings. The loss ends the year for St. Mary's with the same 16-3 mark.
For the Griffins, they are now a perfect 6-0 in the first round of the national tournament. They extend their all-time postseason record to 19-6 with a 9-4 record at the MCLA event. The 2008 champions, Westminster has gone 2-3 all-time in the second game of the tournament.
Westminster will face defending national champion Davenport in Tuesday's quarterfinals. The two teams only other meeting was a 12-10 Davenport win in February of 2009. Davenport defeated Concordia (Calif.) 19-12 on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals.
