No. 2 Cortland Downs Union to Advance to Div. III Final Four

Senior attack Ted McKenna scored a goal and had a team-high six shots, and senior goalie Sean Aaron made 16 saves in net to lead the Dutchmen, who advanced further than any previous Union team in NCAA Tournament play.

Cortland's Joe Slavik had two goals and an assist, Greg Wright scored twice, and goalie Mike Kaminski made 10 saves for the Red Dragons, who will take on Tufts for a spot in the NCAA title game.

Union, which trailed 6-2 at the half, scored on its first possession of the third quarter, as senior attack Nick Alfonzetti notched his seventh goal of the season to cut the Cortland lead to three at 14:07.

After a series of great saves by Aaron, Union had several chances to cut further into the Cortland lead, but Kaminski held the Dutchmen in check, making his best save of the game on junior attack Nolan Connors midway through the quarter.

The Red Dragons scored two quick goals to open up the fourth quarter, as Wright notched his second of the contest with 14:13 to play, and Zack Mulvaney scored at the 12:02 mark to put Cortland up 8-3.

McKenna scored his team-leading 32nd goal of the year on a diving effort at the 10:49 mark off a feed from sophomore attack Rob Santangelo, but Union would get no closer the rest of the way. Cortland's Eric Richards scored with 7:20 remaining to seal the win for the Red Dragons.

The home team got off to a quick start in the contest, as Cortland leading scorer Mike Tota scored in the final seconds of a man-up opportunity at the 7:49 mark. Tota took a pass from Slavik and beat Aaron low.

The Red Dragons added to their lead just over three minutes later as Taylor Mendoza scored from straightaway at 4:24 of the opening quarter.

Union responded at 3:12, as Peter Griesinger notched his third goal of the season, cutting to his right, stopping and beating Kaminski with a low shot to cut the Cortland lead to 2-1 after one quarter of play.

The Red Dragons notched four straight goals in the second quarter to take control of the contest early on. Slavik scored the first of two goals in the first half from just outside the crease at 10:33 of the second half. Wright notched his first of the game at 7:43, scoring from a wide angle.

Slavik notched another tally, firing over the shoulder of Aaron with 6:08 to go in the half to give Cortland a 5-1 lead. With 3:05 to go in the second quarter, Tom Casey scored on a bounce shot to give the Red Dragons their fourth straight goal.

Union answered in the final seconds of the first half, as Nolan Connors scooped up a ground ball and found the open net with less than a second to play to make it 6-2 at the break.

Cortland owned a 41-25 advantage on shots and had a 34-23 edge on ground balls for the contest.
