No. 3 Limestone Downs No. 2 Le Moyne in NCAA Semifinals

Syracuse, N.Y. Senior goalkeeper Steve Gartelman made 12 saves to lead third-ranked Limestone to a 10-8 win over the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA semifinals at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.

Limestone jumped out of the gates with three goals in the first four minutes and 35 seconds of play. After Gartelman made his first save of the day on the opening possession of the game, junior midfielder Zach Cummings scored from the right edge of the crease on a quick-stick shot off a pass from behind the cage by senior attackman Shayne Jackson.

Just under two minutes later and only 21 seconds into a possession following a Le Moyne turnover, senior midfielder Randy Waugh found the back of the net from eight yards out off a drive from outside the restraining line. Off the ensuing face-off, junior face-off specialist Jake Ternosky was left alone on the left edge of the crease and converted a feed from junior midfielder Tor Reinholdt.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard at the 4:18 mark as senior midfielder Nick Blumer (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) registered his 17th goal of the season from 10 yards out on the left side of the goal.

The Saints got the goal back 10 seconds later as senior midfielder Desi Gonzalez caused a Le Moyne turnover, picked up the loose ball and fed sophomore long-stick midfielder Anthony Starnino, who fired in his third goal of the year from 10 yards in front of the net.

Blumer pulled the Dolphins back within two at the 13:54 mark of the second quarter with a shot falling down from 12 yards out.

Waugh tallied the final two goals of the second quarter to give the Saints a 6-2 lead at the intermission. He scored his first with 8:23 left by coming around the right side of the goal and scoring from just off the crease. He replicated the play 3:23 later to complete his hat trick.

The teams traded goals over the first 11 minutes of the third quarter. Sophomore attackman Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) started the scoring one minute in with his team-best 28th goal of year from five yards in front of the goal off a feed from just inside the restraining line by sophomore midfielder Andrew Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn).

Jackson answered with his 26th goal of the year with 12:21 left to extend the lead margin back to four. Chadderdon got the Dolphins within 7-4 three minutes later with a bouncing shot from the left side of the goal off a drive from the center of the restraining box. Junior midfielder Corey Rich pushed Limestone's lead back to four for the final time with 5:36 remaining in the quarter by finishing off a pass from Waugh.

Chadderdon countered 1:34 later with an unassisted tally, his 22nd of the season. Chadderdon closed out the scoring in the quarter with 19.2 seconds left with a shot from 12 yards out on the left side off a crossing pass by junior attackman Tyler Prevost (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Onondaga C.C.).

Limestone opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal in transition. After the Saints committed a turnover, Starnino picked up an errant Le Moyne pass and raced up field before sending a pass to Jackson, who fed junior attackman Riley Loewen on the right edge of the crease for his team-best 47th goal of the year.

Chadderdon got the Dolphins back within two goals (9-7) with 8:09 remaining in the game after faking a right-handed shot and then firing a left-handed shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out.
