No. 10 Maryland Knocks off No. 7 JHU to Advance to Final Four
That decided advantage in possession fueled the remainder of the 6-0 run as well as Joe Cummings capped the first-half scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the first half as he got free in the high slot and buried a quick shot off a nice feed from Kevin Cooper.
Hopes of a comeback took a shot in the opening minutes of the second half as Maryland goalie Niko Amato came up with a big save on a shot by Lee Coppersmith on JHU's first possession and Mike Chanenchuk converted on a hesitation dodge at the other end to make it 7-2. When John Haus tallied an unassisted goal nearly six minutes later, the Terps had their six-goal lead and the Blue Jays' scoreless stretch had reached more 22 minutes.
The Blue Jays finally broke their drought with three seconds remaining in the third quarter when Chris Boland scored from in tight off a nice feed from Rob Guida, but another goal by Chanenchuk and a strike by Billy Gribbin in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter made it 10-3 before Boland and Palmer made it 10-5 with back-to-back goals in a two-minute span midway through the fourth quarter. Cooper's goal in the last two minutes closed the scoring for the Terps, who advance to the national semifinals for the second consecutive year.
“It's frustrating when you don't have the ball and don't have opportunities to score,” Boland noted. “In the second half we had plenty of opportunities and didn't capitalize on them. That's a credit to Maryland and their defense.”
The Terps' first midfield of Snider, Haus and Chanenchuk fueled the victory for Maryland as the trio combined for seven goals. Cummings (1g, 1a) and Cooper (1g, 1a) were Maryland's other multi-point producers and Amato added seven saves, but it was the work of Holmes and Charlie Raffa, who combined to win 12 of 20 faceoffs, and Maryland's domination on ground balls (26-15) that keyed the victory.
Boland (2g), Guida (3a) and Benn (1g, a) led the way for Johns Hopkins, which finishes the season with a 12-4 record. Bassett totaled eight saves for the Blue Jays.
