UNE's Jon Hunt Resigns to Take Position at Bridgton Academy
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England head men's lacrosse coach Jon Hunt will be resigning from his post at the end of June, as officially announced Monday (June 11) by UNE Interim Director of Athletics Curt Smyth. Hunt has accepted the position of head lacrosse coach at Bridgton Academy (Maine).
Hunt led the Nor'easters for seven seasons, which included the most successful years in the history of the program. UNE finished with a winning percentage of at least .500 for the first time ever and won a school-record 10 games in 2012, exceeding the previous single-season mark by two.
Big Blue equalled or surpassed the single-season wins record in each of the last four campaigns. The last four seasons Hunt also saw his teams qualify for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship each time around; no men's lacrosse squad had achieved such status before Hunt's arrival in Biddeford.
Additionally, 2012 marked the first time the Nor'easters hosted a league tournament contest, which was made possible by UNE's first-ever victory over Gordon College (a 9-8 double overtime triumph on April 14) in the 16th meeting all-time. Following the conference playoffs, Hunt and Big Blue recorded yet another program first by gaining a berth into the ECAC Division III New England Championship, and advanced to the title match.
UNE won a total of 41 games during Hunt's tenure, including a 29-26 mark in non-conference matches.
"I will always cherish my time at UNE because of all the wonderful people I have had the good fortune to work with," Hunt commented. "I would like to thank the entire UNE community for the memories of the last seven years."
"Jon brought our program to a level of success never experienced by the men's lacrosse team here at UNE," Smyth said. "We are also grateful for his commitment to doing things the right way, his development of student-athletes, and for the program's involvement in the community."
