Lax Coach Mike: A Spontaneous 4v3 Lacrosse Drill

I recommend that you run the drill a few times in practice so the players get accustomed to it, and then feel free to add it to your pre-game routine or experiment with some of the variations.

1. You may want to add one of the lines to X' and run a line behind the cage and have three lines up top outside of the box. Or even two lines behind the cage and two lines up top.

2. You can have all three defenders come from the same alley, beginning with a line of three all together.

3. You can try the drill in a 3v2 configuration or even 5v6 if you have a 40-man roster.

4. Or you may want a second quick whistle and add a defensive trailer.

I hope you enjoy the drill and send me an e-mail to let me know how your players respond. is a unique site for lacrosse coaches, offering drills and ideas from the greatest coaches in the country. E-mail your comments to
