Alum Thompson Joins Clemson Lacrosse Staff to Coach Goalies

Clemson, SC: Clemson is pleased to announce that Ian Thompson '11 has joined the coaching staff. Thompson played four years with the Tigers as a goalie and will work with the current Tiger keepers. Thompson was an All Conference Goalie during his playing days and in his senior season, ranked 2nd nationally in the MCLA with a save percentage of 69.7%.

"I can't express how pleased I am to have Ian back out on the field with us," said head coach Buff Grubb. "Ian did a great job in cage for us during his time at Clemson but most important is the way that he and classmate Brett Becker handled sharing the position. Both received All Conference honors as seniors even though they shared time on the field which says a lot about Ian and Brett's temperaments. We have a similar situation now with our goalkeepers and Ian's experience and perspective will help us navigate through that to the best for all concerned. I'm also proud of the fact that Brett Becker is coaching at Wake Forest where he will be a 2nd year law student. It will make for an interesting match-up when we play the Deacs this year for sure."

Thompson will coach the Tiger keepers and assist Defensive Coordinator Mike French with the defensive side of the team. The Tigers look to be solid on "D" next season as 2 time All Conference defenseman Brian Murphy returns for his senior season and will be joined by junior All Conference selection Matt Hogue and All Tournament LSM Andrew Paradise. "We were young on the backline last season with Murph interning out west and then got even younger as we lost 5 defensive players to season-ending injuries," states Grubb. "The silver lining to that cloud is a bunch of guys got some serious quality playing time and that should be an advantage for us this year."

The addition of Thompson to the staff will allow assistant coach Andy Campbell to focus more on the midfield units.

Clemson will begin fall practice in early September with fall ball culminating in the annual Southern Comfort Tournament at Clemson the weekend of October 27-28th. The Tentative spring schedule features trips in March to Arizona and in April to Maryland. The Tigers hope to qualify for the MCLA National Championships which will be held in Greenville, SC, 40 minutes from campus.
