Lizards Top Hounds; Rattlers Nip Ohio; Denver Routs Nationals

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Midfielder Brian Langtry scored two of his game-high three goals in the second half as the Long Island Lizards overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to edge the Charlotte Hounds by a 13-9 margin at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday evening.

Langtry, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, tallied both of his second-half goals in the third quarter to ignite the Lizards' comeback.

After the Hounds sprinted out to a quick 3-0 lead in the game's first five minutes, the Lizards answered with back-to-back markers from Langtry and rookie attackman Matt Gibson to narrow the margin to 3-2 with 4:33 remaining in the opening stanza.

But, the Hounds answered with 28 seconds left in the period as attackman Eric Lusby converted a feed from midfielder Stephen Berger to extend the advantage to 4-2.

Charlotte upped its cushion to 6-2 in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter with a pair of goals from Berger and defenseman Ricky Pages. But, the Lizards answered by scoring four of the next five goals to trim the margin to 7-6 at the intermission.

After midfielder Brian Carroll gave Charlotte an 8-6 advantage just 43 seconds into the third quarter, Langtry sparked a five-goal run by the Lizards with back-to-back goals just 52 seconds apart in the closing minutes of the third quarter.

A goal by midfielder Greg Gurenlian and two markers from attackman Max Seibald completed the Lizards' run and gave Long Island an 11-8 lead with 11:01 remaining in regulation.

With 8:46 remaining, midfielder Kevin Kaminski ended a nearly 23-minute scoring drought for the Hounds, closing the margin to 11-9. But, the Lizards used goals from rookie attackman Tommy Palasek and attackman Grant Catalino to secure the victory.

While Langtry led the Lizards with his three-goal effort, Gibson scored two goals with two assists while Catalino and Seibald each added a pair of goals.

Attackman Billy BItter led the Hounds with two goals while Berger and Kaminski each tallied a goal with an assist.

The Charlotte Hounds lost their third straight road game Saturday night, falling 13-9 to the Long Island Lizards in front of a crowd of 1,873 at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY. Lizards midfielder Brian Langtry was named Bud Light Player of the Game for his three goal performance.

The Hounds jumped out to an early lead, started by a highlight reel Jovan Miller goal from behind the net. Matt Danowski scored on the run and Billy Bitter grabbed a rebound to put up a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

The Lizards responded with back-to-back goals of their own. Matt Gibson scored on the crease dive and Langtry on the man-up got to cut the Hounds lead to 3-2. However, the Hounds regained momentum as rookie attackman Eric Lusby made his MLL debut and scored his first career goal to give the Hounds a 4-2 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Offense continued to roll for the Hounds in the seond quarter as Jerry Ragonese won the initial faceoff and long pole Ricky Pages came off the wing and straight downfield to score. Stephen Berger added a crease dive goal to extend the Hounds lead to 6-2.

However, the next two goals would go to the Lizards. Stephen Peyser ripped a jump shot from just inside the arc and Grant Catalino scored off a rebound to pull to the score to 6-4. The Hounds would get another goal from Bitter, but the Lizards tallied two more of their own -- a low shot by Will Managan and Gibson's second of the night, a power-play goal -- to cut the Hounds lead to 7-6 at the end of the half.
