Long-Time Long Island Coach Chris Deeks Passes Away

Chris Deeks, a long-time high school coach on Long Island, passed away suddenly Thursday night, apparently after suffering of a heart attack. Deeks, age 60, was the head varsity football and lacrosse at Great Neck North High School.

Deeks was Empire Games veteran, having been head coach of Long Island twice, winning gold in 1995 and 2008. He also served as an assistant coach three times and coached the Empire Cup Long Island team this past summer. Deeks served as an assistant to Fran McCall and Bob Hoppey at the inaugural Empire Games in the late 70s.

Deeks previously served as head lacrosse coach at Floral Park Memorial. He was also was a defensive coordinator for Hofstra University, which he graduated from in 1970, and St. John's University as well as head coach at Globe Institute of Technology. He also coached the Eastern Region Team at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

The funeral will be ollowed by interment at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.
