Witheford Joins Union Lacrosse Coaching Staff as an Assistant

SCHENECTADY, NY Former men's lacrosse star Derek Witheford '11 has joined the Union College men's lacrosse coaching staff, head coach Paul Wehrum announced.

Witheford, a two-time captain, USILA Honorable Mention All-American and USILA Scholar All-American as a student-athlete, joins Union after spending the last year as a lacrosse coach and educator in England.

"Derek is one of the finest players and leaders I have ever coached in my 40 years as a college coach," Wehrum said. "He played on a state championship team at Wellesley High School (MA), he was a two-time captain at Union, a captain of the USILA North-South Team in 2011, an All-American and a Scholar All-American. Great teams seem to follow Derek around, and I'm confident that will continue in his role as an assistant coach at Union."

While in England, Derek served as head coach of the Senior Men's Team, Under-19 Team, and Under-12 Team with the Wilmslow Lacrosse Club, and working as a local development officer for the English Lacrosse Association in Manchester.

With Wilmslow, Witheford was responsible for creating and implementing game plans, and was brought on specifically to improve defensive strategy. At the English Lacrosse Association, Derek worked at 21 different local schools teaching physical education, with a focus on the sport of lacrosse.

Upon his return from England, Witheford worked at the Union College Lacrosse Camp, and attended numerous recruiting camps across the country over the summer.

In 2011, Witheford became the first Union defenseman to earn USILA All-American recognition since 1993 after a stellar senior season at Union. A four year starter, Derek was a unanimous Liberty League first team selection. He set career marks with a team-leading 72 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers.

Under Witheford's guidance, the Union defense finished second in the conference with a 6.66 goals-against average overall, and led the Liberty League with a 7.00 goals-against average in conference games only.

Witheford helped Union record the most wins in school history and reach the Division III NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
