ESPN Reports That Notre Dame Is Heading to the ACC

ESPN radio has reported this morning that the University of Notre Dame is prepared to join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as a full member in all sports except football. However, the Fighting Irish would play five football games annually against ACC teams.

It is unclear at this point whether a deal has been finalized and, if so, how long it would be before Notre Dame could exit the Big East. ESPN says "the Big East currently requires members to provide 27 months notice to exit, although West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse were able to leave earlier by paying a higher exit fee."

If/when the Irish join the ACC for lacrosse - probably not before 2015 or 2016 - the conference would, with the addition of Syracuse, have six teams and therefore be eligible for an automatic qualification berth to the NCAA tournament.
