Navy Lacrosse Adds Atkinson as Volunteer Assistant Coach

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy head women's lacrosse coach Cindy Timchal has announced that Kirstyn Atkinson will join the staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Atkinson served as a graduate assistant coach at Drexel during the 2012 season following her playing career at Northwestern (2008-2011).

"We are very excited to have Kirstyn join our staff," Timchal said. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and abilities from winning national championships as a player at Northwestern and also coaching at Drexel. She is a great match with the Navy women's lacrosse program."

"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of the Navy Women's Lacrosse family and work with one of the best coaches in the country in Cindy Timchal," said Atkinson. "It is an honor to be at the Naval Academy and I'm excited for what's to come with the Navy Women's Lacrosse program."

While at Drexel last season, Atkinson helped the team to an 11-6 record and a berth in the CAA postseason tournament.

A midfielder during her playing career at Northwestern, Atkinson played in 66 games and was a member of three national championship teams (2008, 2009 and 2011). The Wildcats held a record of 85-5 (.944) while Atkinson was a member of the program.

Atkinson was also a two-year member of the Northwestern women's soccer team, starting 19 games as a freshman and sophomore and seeing action in 36 games.

In addition to coaching at Drexel, Atkinson has extensive experience coaching youth lacrosse clubs and camps.

The Baltimore, Md. native earned a bachelor's degree in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern in June 2011.
