Cornell's 2013 Lacrosse Schedule Includes Big City Classic

A midweek road trip to Canisius is slated for Tuesday, March 5, as Cornell will look to extend its record against the Griffs to a perfect 9-0 in the series. Last season, Canisius finished the year with a 6-8 record overall, which included a 19-4 loss to the Big Red, but won the MAAC tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament, where it fell to eventual national champion Loyola in the first round.

On Saturday, March 9, Cornell will play its first contest outside the state of New York as it travels to Virginia. The Cavaliers finished the 2012 campaign with a 12-4 record and advanced to the national quarterfinals, where they fell to Notre Dame, 12-10.

The Ivy League portion of the schedule begins the following weekend as the Big Red travels to Yale on Saturday, March 16. The Bulldogs had an outstanding season in 2012, winning the Ivy League tournament title, posting an 11-5 record overall and a mark of 4-2 in the conference. Yale earned a trip to the NCAA tournament but fell to Notre Dame in the opening round, 13-7. Cornell has won 14 of the last 15 meetings to improve to 48-23-1 in the all-time series.

Cornell opens a four-game home stand on Tuesday, March 19, when it welcomes Bucknell to Schoellkopf Field, followed by Penn on Saturday, March 23, Siena on Tuesday, March 6 and Dartmouth on Saturday, March 30. The Big Red holds the lead in the all-time series against the Quakers (62-22-3) and the Big Green (47-15), but has never faced either the Bison or the Saints in men's lacrosse.

Both Bucknell (9-7) and Siena (11-5) are coming off solid 2012 campaigns, but Penn (3-10) and Dartmouth (5-9) struggled last season, finishing in a tie for last place in the Ivy League with identical conference marks of 1-5.

The Big Red spends all of April on the road, beginning with a trip to Harvard on Saturday, April 6, before heading back to the Carrier Dome for a game against Syracuse on Tuesday, April 9. Cornell ends the month at Brown on Saturday, April 20, before heading to NYC for its game with Princeton.

The Big Red has won 15 straight against Harvard and owns a 63-23 record in the all-time series. After a solid debut in 2011, second-year head coach Chris Wojcik led his alma mater to a record of 6-8 (2-4 Ivy League) last season.

The series with Syracuse began in 1920 and since that time, there have been only four seasons (1944, 1945, 1977, 1978) that the two squads have not faced each other in varsity competition. The game, which will be televised locally on Time Warner Sports, should prove to be another epic battle in what has become a fierce rivalry with seven of the 14 games played since the 2000 season being decided by less than two goals. Syracuse is looking to rebound from a 9-8 season in 2012, which included a 12-6 loss to the Big Red on Schoellkopf Field.

Cornell owns a 34-17 record in the all-time series with Brown, but will be looking to avenge its last second loss to Bears from a season ago when it travels to Providence, R.I. The Bears finished last year with a 7-8 record overall and a mark of 3-3 in the conference.

For the fourth year, the Ivy League will sponsor a post-season tournament on the weekend of May 3-5. The tournament will include the top four teams in the Ivy League regular season round-robin competition and will be hosted by the round-robin winner. Cornell has participated in all three of the previous Ivy League tournaments, including winning the tournament title in 2011.
