Three Lacrosse Captains Named by UMBC for 2012-2013

BALTIMORE - UMBC has selected seniors Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox), Neill Lewnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and Ethan Murphy (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) as its captains for the 2012-2013 academic year. Jones and Murphy will serve as captains for the second consecutive year.

"Strong leadership is an essential ingredient to the success of any team and being elected as captain by your peers is a tribute to a person's strong character and commitment," head coach Don Zimmerman said. "Our staff is excited to have Scott Jones, Neill Lewnes and Ethan Murphy serve as this year's tri-captains and are confident that together they will make the most out of this incredible opportunity."

An attackman and four-year letterwinner, Jones has earned All-Conference honors in back-to-back years, including a First-Team selection in 2012. He tallied multiple points in 13 contests in 2012 and led the Retrievers with 36 goals and 40 total points. Jones finished the campaign eighth in the nation with 2.77 goals per game. He now also has 12 career games with three or more goals, seven of which were recorded last season.

Jones' season total of 36 goals in 2012 was the most since Alex Hopmann scored 36 times in 2009 and it is tied with four others for the 11th-best single season in school history.

Murphy earned America East All-Academic Team honors in 2012. He converted from a long-stick midfielder position to a spot on close defense. In his third season with the Retrievers, the political science major started all 13 games and led the team with 15 caused turnovers. He was also second on the squad with 39 ground balls.

Lewnes was having a brilliant season in 2012 when he suffered a torn ACL in the seventh game of the year vs. Hartford. The short-stick defensive midfielder specialist amassed 30 ground balls, which still finished third on the squad and his average of 4.3 ground balls per game placed fourth in the America East Conference. He also caused nine turnovers in just a shade over more than half of a campaign.

Also a four-year varsity athlete, Lewnes was selected to the 2011:00 a.m.erica East All-Academic team. His brother Nate is a freshman midfielder on the 2012-13 Retriever squad.

The Retrievers will compete at the Drexel Fall Ball event on Sat., Oct. 20. UMBC will take on Navy and Penn at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Drexel's Vidas Field.
