US Lacrosse Awards Physical Education Equipment Grants

BALTIMORE, Oct. 31, 2012 - US Lacrosse announced that 74 schools and civic organizations nationwide have been selected as 2012 Physical Education Equipment Grant recipients and will be receiving "soft" sticks and balls to help support the introduction of the sport in their curriculums.

In addition, three other cities Roanoke, Va., Auburn, Ala., and Liverpool, N.Y. - have been awarded P.E. training in-service workshops. Each of these workshops could have up to 30 schools and organizations in attendance.

"We're excited that this program provides schools and local organizations from coast-to-coast with the opportunity to introduce the sport of lacrosse into their physical education curriculums," said Meghan Mulford, USL's Programs Manager. "The generous support of our equipment contributor for this program, STX, helps to provide exposure to this fun and exciting sport for many kids that have never seen lacrosse before."

The objective of the PE Equipment Grant Program is to initiate, expand, or enhance participation in the sport by enabling teachers to introduce lacrosse in the PE classroom and other similar venues. Each equipment grant includes 30 soft lacrosse sticks, 30 soft lacrosse balls, and one copy of the US Lacrosse PE Curriculum Guide and Reproducible packet.

Applicants also have the option to request in-service style training from US Lacrosse for educators and other lacrosse stakeholders who want to learn how to introduce and safely teach the sport of lacrosse to their students. All workshop participants are awarded a full set of equipment for their school or organization.

The Thomas Edison Charter Academy (TECA) in San Francisco is among the 2012 PE Equipment Grant recipients.

"We received our PE lacrosse equipment recently and I can't adequately share the giggles and shrieks of excitement of the students as they held a lacrosse stick for the first time and as they ran with joy and abandon practicing cradling with their new sticks," said TECA's Kate Sherwood. "I was simply delighted to see the excitement on our students' faces today as they experienced a sport that they would never have had the chance to without the generosity of US Lacrosse."
