UMBC 2013 Lacrosse Schedule Includes Four Tourney Teams

BALTIMORE UMBC has announced its schedule for the 2013 season, as announced today by co-head coaches Amy Appelt and Tony Giro. The 16-game regular season slate features six in-state rivals and four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago.

"We are very excited to get started with the spring of 2013," Appelt said. "We have some great competition next spring. If we want to be the best we have to play the best, so we are very enthusiastic to get the season started."

The Retrievers open their campaign on the road against American (Feb. 16), before hosting two straight against California (Feb. 23) and Towson (Feb. 27). UMBC will hit the road again on March 2 for a rematch with Colgate, who the Retrievers defeated 13-11 at UMBC Stadium last season, followed by a meeting with Maryland the first match-up between the two programs since 2007 on March 5 at College Park.

The black and gold will look to avenge a 9-8 loss to Drexel last season, when the Dragons visit UMBC Stadium on March 9. The Retrievers entertain Mount St. Mary's the following Friday, March 15, before hitting the road to take on Wagner on March 18.

UMBC opens America East action on March 23 at defending regular season conference champions Boston University. The Retrievers return home for a three-game homestand against Loyola (March 27), Binghamton (April 3) and Stony Brook (April 6).

The black and gold conclude the regular season at defending America East Champion Albany (April 13), versus Johns Hopkins (April 17), at Vermont (April 20) and at home versus New Hampshire (April 27).

The Retrievers enter the 2013 campaign under new leadership as Giro and Appelt take the reins for their first full season. Giro served as the acting head coach in UMBC's 7-6 victory against No. 19 Johns Hopkins in the regular season finale and the Retrievers America East semifinal match-up against second-seeded Stony Brook last season.
