Denver, Irish, Loyola, Air Force to Play in Mile High Classic

BALTIMORE, Md. - University of Denver will once again take part in the Whitman's Sampler Mile High Classic. The Pioneers will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a double header with defending National Champions Loyola and Air Force at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium on March 16, 2013.

Whitman's Sampler has entered into a two-year commitment as title sponsor of the Mile High Classic as well as a new signature event called the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic that will be played at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

"We are thrilled to once again, be able to host the Whitman's Sampler Mile High Classic in Denver," said head coach Bill Tierney. "The cooperation from the coaches, Whitman's Sampler, our good friends from the Broncos and Outlaws organizations, and Inside Lacrosse, has been amazing. The University of Denver vs. Notre Dame is always a premier match-up of Division I NCAA tournament teams. Adding the 2012 National Champion Loyola University Greyhounds and the United States Air Force Academy to the roster, guarantees another fantastic Division I lacrosse doubleheader for the Colorado lacrosse community to enjoy. We are very excited about this event and are thankful for all who are going to be a part of it."

In 2012, a passionate crowd of 12,282 gathered at Sports Authority Field at Mile High for the first-ever Whitman's Sampler Mile High Classic. The historic doubleheader (Duke vs. Denver and Virginia vs. Penn) helped cement Colorado's reputation as the sport's No. 1 emerging market. The second edition promises more excitement with a lineup featuring the reigning National Champions and top contenders for the 2013 title.

2013 Whitman's Sampler Mile High Classic (Sports Authority Field at Mile High; Denver, Co.; March 16):

* Game No. 1 - Loyola vs. Air Force (4:00 p.m.): The first game features the defending national champion Greyhounds against the upset-minded Falcons in an ECAC league match-up. The defending national champions and pre-season No. 1 Loyola returns the bulk of its scoring from its potent offense, including All-America attackman Mike Sawyer. Air Force hopes to continue its climb up the rankings. The Falcons are paced by sophomore attackman Keith Dreyer.

* Game No. 2 - Notre Dame vs. Denver (6:30 p.m.): The marquee match-up includes two teams with championship aspirations of their own in 2013, as Notre Dame battles the hometown Denver Pioneers. Both teams will be hungry to establish themselves as a contender with a key early-season victory. Notre Dame boasts a stingy defense led by the nation's top goaltender, senior John Kemp. Denver counters with an offense led by a trio of All-American middies in Jeremy Noble, Cam Flint and Chase Carraro.
