UC Davis Signs Four to NLIs During the Early Signing Period

DAVIS, Calif. -- First-year UC Davis head coach Kate Henwood signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period, it was announced in late November. Alphabetically, Henwood's first NLI class includes K.C. Hill of Novato, Calif.; Melissa Kellan of Vienna, Va.; Tess Kevorkian of Danville, Calif.; and Eliza Marcus of Ridgefield, Conn.

All four prospects are high school seniors who are expected to enroll at the university for the fall of 2013.

Hill has led Marin Catholic High School in scoring every year since her freshman season, including a school-record 119 goals with 68 assists as a junior last year. She owns three consecutive first-team All-Marin County Athletic League awards, including MCAL Player of the Year in 2012. Last season, Hill helped the Wildcats to a 21-3 overall season and the North Coast Section Division II championship. She scored four goals with three assists in the title game against Miramonte HS. Hill also played five years of travel ball with BearLax Club.

"K.C. has had a decorated high school career and we will count on her to fill big shoes on attack next year," said Henwood. "She is a physical, hard-nosed attacker who has the ability to make big plays."

Kellan is a 6-foot attacker/midfielder for James Madison High School in Vienna. She earned second-team All-Liberty District accolades as a sophomore and junior after picking up honorable mention as a freshman. Kellan scored 35 goals with 46 assists in 2012, improving from 30 goals and 35 assists in her sophomore season. Last year, she helped Madison to a 15-2 overall record and a No. 3 state ranking. Also a member of Capital Girls Lacrosse Club, Kellan as made back-to-back All-Region tournaments for the Warhawks.

"Melissa has an incredible knack for finding the back of the net," Henwood said. "She brings an East Coast grit that will help her to be a dominating force on our attack right away."

Kevorkian claimed second-team All-East Bay Athletic League distinction as a sophomore than first-team honors as a junior defender and team captain at San Ramon Valley High School. She is also a teammate of Hill at BearLax Club, playing for the 2013 Blue squad. Kevorkian earned Western All-Star honors as a member of BearLax' summer travel squad in 2011.

"Tess is a consistent and intelligent local player with quick feet who will add depth to our defense. Her no-nonsense attitude is exactly what we need in the backfield," said Henwood.

Marcus will begin her third season as the center mid for Ridgefield High School this spring. She scored 25 goals with 16 assists as a junior, earning her team's "Spirit of the Stick" award and helping the Tigers advance in the Class L state tournament. The 5-foot-8 Marcus, who competes on the club circuit for Westchester Elite, also played three years for the RHS basketball team.

"We are very excited about what Eliza will bring to the table on attack and in the midfield," said Henwood. "Her vision, athleticism, and hunger to score will be a problem for our MPSF opponents."

UC Davis went 6-10 last season, ranking third nationally in draw controls and fifth in scoring offense.
