Red Storm Announces Lacrosse Schedule for the 2013 Season

QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2012) Head lacrosse coach Jason Miller has officially announced the schedule for the 2013 season as the Red Storm will look to navigate through a challenging slate of games and make a return trip to the Big East Lacrosse Championship. The 2013 schedule features 13 regular season games, six to be played at DaSilva Memorial Field as well as three neutral site contests that will showcase the St. John's lacrosse program in new and exciting venues.

"We are excited about how the 2013 schedule has shaped up," said Miller. "We continue to challenge ourselves both inside the Big East and out of conference, culminating in what is as competitive of a schedule as there is in Division I."

The Red Storm will once again face a top-flight group of opponents in 2013 as four of the 13 teams begin the season ranked in the Inside Lacrosse poll.

St. John's lacrosse will also be featured in one of Inside Lacrosse's signature events as it will battle Syracuse in the first-ever Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. after playing in the Konica-Minolta Big City Classic each of the last two seasons. The Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic will be a tripleheader event with the rematch of the inaugural 2012 Big East Lacrosse Championship between the Red Storm and the Orange to begin the festivities.

The Red Storm will take part in another neutral site Big East match-up when it takes on the Georgetown Hoyas in The Battle of Bethpage at Bethpage High School. The Long Island showdown will allow many of the St. John's players to compete in their own backyard as a sizeable portion of the roster hails from the area.

"We are really excited about the additional exposure we will receive as participants in the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic as well as The Battle of Bethpage," said Miller. "Those will both be big stages for us and should add a little extra incentive to what are already huge Big East match-ups."

St. John's will compete in three separate exhibition match-ups during the preseason as it prepares for regular season action. The Red Storm will take the field for the first time in 2013 against the University of Massachusetts at DaSilva Memorial Field at noon on Saturday, Jan. 26. The second exhibition contest is a doubleheader at the University of Hartford against the host Hawks and Bryant University on Saturday, Feb. 2. The final preseason exhibition will take place in Queens against Lafayette College on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m.

The 2013 regular season begins with a non-conference match-up at Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon as the Red Storm will battle the Crusaders in the opener for the fifth straight year. The Red Storm will begin the 23rd season of college lacrosse competition in Queens when it takes on Yale University on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.

St. John's will face a quick turnaround with an early season midweek match-up against local rival Stony Brook University on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 3:00 p.m. The Red Storm will then travel upstate over the weekend to take on Siena at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.

On Saturday, March 9, St. John's will take on Syracuse in the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic which is organized by Inside Lacrosse. St. John's and Syracuse open up the day's slate with faceoff scheduled for noon at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The 2:30 p.m. match-up pits two Philadelphia rivals against each other as the University of Pennsylvania will battle Villanova University. The final game will begin at 5:00 p.m. and pairs a couple of lacrosse programs on the rise as Penn State draws Lehigh University.
