Kennesaw State Announces Its 2013 Lacrosse Team Captains

KENNESAW, Ga. - As preparation continues for the inaugural season of Kennesaw State women's lacrosse, head coach Kristina Llanes has announced the team's captains for the upcoming campaign.

Junior Arielle Schmidt (Marietta, Ga./Sprayberry HS), sophomore Taylor Southerland (Acworth, Ga./Harrison HS) and freshman Kyra Fitzgerald (Marietta, Ga./Sprayberry HS) were selected in a vote of their teammates.

"We are extremely excited to announce the captains for our inaugural season. These three young women are exceptional examples of the caliber of people and athletes our program values," Llanes said. "They will lead us against some challenging opponents and will provide tremendous leadership on and off the field."

Schmidt joins the Owls program following a successful athletic career at Sprayberry HS where she competed in lacrosse, softball and track and field. She was a three-year member of the lacrosse team and helped the Yellow Jackets to the 2008 state playoffs. Schmidt was given the Stinger Award as the best newcomer to the game of lacrosse and honored with the 2008 Coaches Award and selected Most Valuable Player a senior in 2009.

Southerland was a two-time letterwinner at Harrison HS, earning the team's Defensive Award in 2010 and 2011. She was a member of the 2010 Region Area 1 AAAAA runner-up team and competed for the Hotlanta Lacrosse club team.

Fitzgerald joins the Kennesaw State program after earning numerous accolades during her four-year career at Sprayberry HS. She was named the team's Most Valuable Player her junior and senior seasons while serving as team captain. As a senior, Fitzgerald was named the Marietta Daily Journal's Athlete of the Month. She also participated in the Limestone Lacrosse Camp for three years and competed two seasons in the Sprayberry Summer League.

The Kennesaw State lacrosse team opens its 2013 season on Feb. 10 when it travels to Nashville, Tenn., to play Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
