Mark Millon Selected First in the 2013 MLL Supplemental Draft

"We needed to add support at the face-off X, and we were able to do that right away with Chris," said Cannons head coach Steve Duffy.

As a rookie in 2011, Mattes played in one game for the Cannons backing up starter Chris Eck, going 7-22 on face-offs with five ground balls in a 10-9 victory over Denver. Picked up by Denver in 2012, Mattes played six games for the Outlaws last season with a 50-177 overall record.

The Cannons added another face-off specialist in the 8th round (62nd overall) with Craig Bunker, a 2011 graduate of Colby College in Maine and Topsfield, MA native.

To strengthen the defense, the Cannons picked six players at the position. Ryan Nizolek (4th round, 30th overall) and Pat Gaffney (9th round, 70th overall) will return to Boston, plus new additions Tom Celentani (2nd round, 14th overall), Jeff Brown (6th round, 46th overall), Tim Langmaid (10th round, 78th overall), and Frank Tufano (11th round, 86th overall). The Cannons return Eric Hagarty (12th round, 94 overall) as a back-up goalie and add Mike Gabel (3rd round, 22nd overall) for additional security in net.

"Obviously another priority was adding depth to our defense," said Duffy. "Overall, we're happy with the guys we picked up and hope that a number of them will contribute in 2013. We brought back a few guys who have already proven themselves as contributors, plus a few new guys we're excited to get a look at in March."

The Cannons added midfielder Scott LaRue, who played in five games for the Charlotte Hounds as a rookie last season. JJ Gilbane (5th round, 40th overall) and Marty Bowes (6th round, 44th overall), who were on the Cannons' Collegiate Inactive List throughout the 2012 season, also return to the midfield. Jeff Cohen (7th round, 54th overall), a 2012 Harvard graduate, was the lone addition to the Cannons' attack.

"In addition to filling a few specific holes, we were looking for the best players available to put together a competitive roster for training camp, which I think we achieved," said Cannons general manager Kevin Barney.

Immediately following the draft, the Cannons traded veteran defenseman Jack Reid to the Long Island Lizards for a conditional pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft.
