Bucknell Names 2013 Lacrosse Captains, Announces Schedule

LEWISBURG, Pa. Bucknell head lacrosse coach Randall Goldsborough has announced four captains for the 2013 season. Seniors Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) along with juniors Char Damico (Haverford, Pa./Baldwin School) and Sophie Kleinert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) will take on leadership roles this season.

Hurwitz, Wendling and Kleinert also served as captains last year, and they will be joined by Damico, a defender who is working hard to come back from a season-ending knee injury suffered early in the 2012 campaign.

Damico started seven games for the Bison as a freshman in 2011 and was once again a starter on defense last season before suffering the injury prior to the Manhattan game on Feb. 18.

"Char has been down a very tough road these last 10 months," said Goldsborough. "Due to the injury, she never had a chance to exhibit her abilities on the field and obviously that frustrated her immensely. What impresses me about Char is her ability to stay focused on the big picture. She is determined to work overtime to get back on the field, and she has deeply connected with each of her teammates. She is a very driven person and I know she is going to bring a style of leadership to our program that will elevate our success both on and off the field."

Hurwitz has developed into one of the team's go-to offensive players over the last two seasons. She tied for the team lead with 29 goals as a sophomore in 2011, and then last season she set career highs in points (41) and assists (16) while scoring 25 goals. She had a four-goal, three-assist game against Presbyterian and recorded at least one point in 14 of 17 games.

"Madi has been a very consistent leader from day one since I began coaching here over a year ago," said Goldsborough. "Her enthusiasm for lacrosse and for her teammates is very contagious, and the team feeds off of her vocal leadership every day. I'm very excited to have Madi back as a leader on this team for a second year in a row."

Kleinert is a versatile midfielder who contributes offensively, defensively, in transition and on draw controls. She scored a career-high 13 goals last season, including hat tricks against Presbyterian and Lafayette. She also recorded 19 draw controls and 17 ground balls.

"Sophie is the type of leader that we have been pleasantly surprised to have," said Goldsborough. "She is the glue behind the scenes that bonds the team, and it is clear that she is doing an amazing job of it. We are so excited to have her once again this year as a captain, and it's a well-deserved honor for her.

Wendling has played in more games than any active Bison player. She has started all 50 of the team's games over the last three seasons, playing both defense and midfield. Last season she recorded three goals and four assists while ranking second on the team in draw controls with 54. She also collected 18 ground balls and forced 13 turnovers. Wendling pocketed a career-high seven draw controls in a wild 16-15 win over Liberty and had six each against Penn State and Colgate.

"Adrienne is the hardest-working player on this team, hands down," praised Goldsborough. "She leads by example in every practice and every lift and really understands and demonstrates what it takes to be a competitive student-athlete. She is highly respected by her teammates and coaches, and I am very thrilled to have her back as a captain again this year."
