Buckeyes' 2013 Lacrosse Slate Includes Five Tourney Teams

COLUMBUS, Ohio Alexis Venechanos, head coach of Ohio State, released the 2013 schedule Monday, highlighted by five contests against NCAA tournament teams from a year ago.

"We are proud to announce our 2013 schedule," Venechanos, who enters her third season in Columbus, said. "This challenging schedule has many teams who played in the NCAA tournament or captured conference championships. We had a very productive fall and the athletes are more than excited to start the season."

The Buckeyes open the regular season with back-to-back road games at Louisville (Feb. 16) and William and Mary (Feb. 20) before returning home to Columbus for three of their next four games. Boston College visits on Feb. 23, which is followed by a quick trip to Notre Dame (Feb. 27) and a pair of home contests vs. Stanford (March 2) and Canisius (March 10).

Ohio State will then head to Boston University (March 16) prior to opening up the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) slate with two road games. The Buckeyes face Florida, a 2012 NCAA semifinalist, March 23 in Gainesville, followed by defending NCAA champion Northwestern (March 27) in Evanston.

The Buckeyes begin a three-game homestand March 30 vs. Hofstra, following it with contests against San Diego State (April 3) and ALC foe Vanderbilt (April 7). The conference season continues at Penn State (April 14) before traveling to North Carolina for games against Duke (April 20), a NCAA quarterfinalist last season, and High Point (April 21).

Ohio State concludes the regular season with Johns Hopkins April 28 before heading to the ALC tournament hosted by the Blue Jays in Baltimore, Md., May 2-5.

The NCAA tournament format expands from 16 to 26 teams in 2013 as all 13 conference champions will receive automatic qualification into the field. The remaining 13 teams will be at-large selections. The top eight teams will be seeded in the bracket and host first- and second-round games with the top six of those teams receiving opening-round byes.

Ohio State returns eight starters from the team that finished 2012 with an 11-6 overall record and its second-consecutive trip to the semifinals of the ALC tournament. The Buckeyes reached double-digit victories for the seventh time in 17 seasons after starting the year 5-0 for the first time in a decade.
