Colgate Lacrosse Names Captains, Announces 2013 Schedule

The regular season begins Feb. 9 at Bryant and plays into the Patriot League tournament, set for April 26-28 at the site of the regular season winner. Colgate then makes a May 4 trek to Maryland to prepare for possible NCAA tournament action, which begins the following weekend.

Colgate's home and Patriot League opener is March 9 against Holy Cross. The Raiders also play a pair of Tuesday games against regional rivals Hobart (March 5) and Binghamton (March 12).

Colgate finished 14-4 last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA championship. The final Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll of the 2012 season had Colgate at No. 8.

The Raiders return All-Patriot League first-team performers Peter Baum and Rob Grabher, and second-teamers Ryan Walsh and Bobby Lawrence. Inside Lacrosse magazine already has tabbed Baum to its 2013 Preseason All-America first team, while naming Walsh to the third team. The magazine also selected Matt Baker, Baum and Grabher for its coaches' preseason all-conference squad.

Murphy Q&A on the 2013 Schedule

Raiders head coach Mike Murphy sat down with to discuss the 2013 schedule. Here are his comments:

How do you see the schedule and the Patriot League race unfolding?

Murphy: "The schedule itself shapes up to test us in a lot of different ways. It gets us into some areas that are important for recruiting, and the caliber of teams on this schedule is very important as we develop the 2013 version of the Colgate Raiders.

"That 2013 Patriot League schedule is shaping up to be a gauntlet. From top to bottom, the league is poised for another breakout season. The top five teams in 2012 were not separated all that much.

"The Naval Academy came up with a huge win at the end of the year against Johns Hopkins, beat us here in Hamilton, and if they have another win in the Patriot League they are one of the top four teams and somebody that was in the league tournament last year wouldn't have been in.

"We win a one-goal game against Lehigh and a one-goal game against Bucknell if those games go the other way maybe we're not there.

"The differential between 1 and 5 right now is thin. You have the five schools that have historically been at the top one year or another, but you can't sleep on what's happening at Lafayette and Holy Cross. Lafayette was in the Patriot League tournament in 2010. It's a great school, so Jim (Rogalski), their first year coach a guy I'm very familiar with will continue to recruit great talent and put his stamp on the Leopards.
