Winthrop Names Lacrosse Team Captains for Inaugural Season

ROCK HILL, SC Winthrop lacrosse coach John Sung has announced that Maddi Genovese, Claire Feeney and Alyssa Blevins will serve as the women's lacrosse captains for the team's inaugural season of 2013.

"It was tough to pick captains to lead such a young team," Sung said. "Maddi, Claire and Alyssa will set a great example on and off the field for their teammates. They are not your typical ra-ra captains. They will lead with their tireless work ethic."

Genovese is a redshirt junior for the Eagles and came to Winthrop out of East Amherrst, NY. Genovese played for the Winthrop club lacrosse team her first two years in Rock Hill and was added to the Winthrop roster after open tryouts last year.

"Maddi is a true diamond in the rough," Sung said. "She has great leadership qualities which this team will feed off of."

Feeney is a freshman out of Greenwich High School in Old Greenwich, CT. Feeney was an All-American her senior high school season. She also earned All-Conference honors her sophomore, junior and senior seasons with All-State honors her junior and senior seasons.

"Claire is going to be one our fiercest competitors," Sung said. "She is going to be someone that this team leans on to win ballgames as the season progresses."

Blevins rounds out the 2013 captains and is one of only two players on the team with NCAA playing experience. Blevins is a sophomore and transferred to Winthrop from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She played one season with the Retrievers, seeing time in seven matches.

"Alyssa was a top-five recruit coming out of high school," Sung said. "The experience she gained playing Division I lacrosse at UMBC will prove invaluable to this young squad."

The Eagles open their inaugural season on February 8 when they travel to take on Howard University. Winthrop will host its first ever lacrosse match on Friday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Marquette University.
