WILA Announces 2013 Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll

ALAMOSA, Colo.- After taking the league by storm in 2012, the Lindenwood University Lady Lions have been picked to repeat as Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Champions in 2013, according to the league's first ever pre-season women's coaches' poll, announced Tuesday (Jan. 29).

The Lady Lions, who posted a 15-2 overall record while going a perfect 8-0 in their first year of WILA membership, received four first place votes and took the poll's top spot with just six points.

Meanwhile, 2011 and inaugural WILA Champion Regis received the other two first place votes and finished second in the poll with eight overall points. The Rangers, who went 6-2 to finish second behind Lindenwood in 2012, also led all WILA teams with four selections to the 12-member Preseason All-WILA team that was selected in conjunction with the poll.

Fort Lewis, which finished third in last year's standings, took the No. 3 spot in the poll as well with 14 total points and had three Preseason All-WILA picks, as did Lindenwood. Colorado Mesa was picked fourth in the poll with 16 points after a fourth place finish in 2012 and had one Preseason All-WILA pick in junior Rachael Sutton, last year's WILA Defensive Player of the Year.

Rounding out the poll is Adams State, fifth with 22 points, and McKendree, sixth with 24 points. Adams State finished fifth in last year's standings while McKendree is a newcomer to the association and to the sport of women's lacrosse in 2013.

Lindenwood's selections to the Preseason All-WILA team are Lindsey Palmer, Justiene Groothuis and Christine Hehmeyer at the attack, midfielder and goalie positions, respectively. All three were First Team All-WILA picks in 2012.

Regis is represented on the team by Erin Dybus at attack, Danica Cutshall at midfielder and Sierra Perrella and Erin Flynn at defender. Fort Lewis' representatives are Jessica Norby at forward, Brook Wineland at midfielder, and twin-sisters Ally and Abby Kvidera at midfielder and defender, respectively.

The poll, the first in the WILA's brief history, called for each of the association's four head coaches to rank the teams 1-5 while excluding his of her own squad. Coaches were also not allowed to vote for their own players in selecting the first-ever Preseason All-WILA team.

McKendree will open the season with a scrimmage on Feb. 9 at Fontbonne (Mo.) before Regis will travel to Colorado Mesa for the first regular season and WILA game of the campaign on Feb. 16. The other three WILA squads then open the season on the following weekend (Feb. 22-24).
