High Point Drops Tight Battle to Delaware in Inaugural Game

After Smith scored the game's first goal four minutes in, High Point scored three of the next four to go up 3-2. But Delaware answered by scoring four straight goals, including consecutive tallies by Diachenko just 44 seconds apart, to take the lead for good at 6-3.

Delaware took a 7-4 lead at the half as Smith scored with just four seconds left in the stanza and the teams traded goals throughout the third period before the Hens went up 10-7 on a goal by Kormondy with just eight ticks left.

A goal by High Point's Christian Beith just three minutes into the final quarter narrowed the gap to 10-8, but the Hens gained some breathing room on back-to-back goals from McRoy and Kormandy to go up 12-8 with 6:04 remaining. Lomas scored two goals in the final 2:27 for High Point but the Panthers never got closer.

Delaware will continue play next Saturday when the Blue Hens host Bucknell at 1:00 p.m. in the home opener at Delaware Stadium.
