Generals Earn IWLCA Preseason Ranking

GRAND LAKE, Colo. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced its 2013 Division III Preseason Poll, and Washington and Lee sits at No. 15.

Defending National Champion Trinity (Conn.) was chosen for the preseason No. 1 spot. Salisbury sits at No. 2 and SUNY Cortland is ranked No. 3. Rounding out the Top 5, Gettysburg is ranked fourth and Middlebury was voted for the fifth spot.

W&L finished its 2012 season with a 15-5 overall record and ended its year with a 16-8 loss to Mary Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Generals went a perfect 9-0 in conference play and claimed the program's 13th ODAC Championship.

The Generals are led by three captains in senior Caroline Kingsbery (Short Hills, N.J./Kent Place School), and juniors Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park).

Kingsbery recorded 19 starts on a defensive unit that registered a conference-best 8.45 goals-against average. Her 14 caused turnovers were tied for third on the team and she also picked up 15 ground balls and two draw controls.

A Second Team All-ODAC selection, Brewster is returning as the second-leading scorer after recording 38 points on 31 goals and seven assists in 20 appearances (7 starts). The midfielder added 33 ground balls, 22 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers.

Waxter entered the field in 14 games with 13 starts as a defender, and collected 23 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and seven draw controls. She helped the back third finish 21st in Division III in GAA, holding opponents to a conference-low 169 goals en route to earning Third Team All-ODAC honors.

W&L opens its 2013 campaign on February 20, when it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:00 pm contest.
