MAAC Preseason Lacrosse Coaches' Poll and All-MAAC Team

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Siena has won four straight MAAC Regular Season Titles and five of the past six. And according to the conference's seven head coaches, the Saints are the favorite to win again in 2013. Siena has been picked first in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll and senior captain Danny Martinsen is the conference's Preseason Player of the Year.

Siena, which finished 11-5 a year ago and a perfect 6-0 in the MAAC, advanced to the conference championship game. Siena received 45 overall votes in the preseason poll, followed by Marist (39) and defending MAAC Champion Canisius (36). Detroit was picked fourth (28), followed by Jacksonville (25), VMI (15) and Manhattan (8).

The Saints enter the 2013 season having won 30 of their last 31 MAAC Regular Season games including 15 straight conference road games. Siena was also recently picked to win the MAAC by Inside Lacrosse Faceoff Yearbook with Martinsen being named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

Marist College finished second in the poll with 39 points. Canisius, the defending MAAC champion was third with 36 points, followed by University of Detroit Mercy (28), Jacksonville University (25), Virginia Military Institute (15) and Manhattan College (8).

A First Team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Tournament Team selection last season, Martinsen ranked second in the MAAC in both scoring (62) and assists (29) as a junior trailing only teammate and conference Player of the Year Bryan Neufeld. He tied for fourth in the MAAC in goals (33), while ranking 14th nationally in points per game (3.88) and 17th in assists per game (1.81).

A two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week last season, Martinsen carries a 33-game scoring streak into this season the eight longest streak in the nation. He enters his senior season with 55 career assists seventh most amongst all active Division I players and 15 career hat tricks which ranks fifth most.

Martinsen was joined on the Preseason All-MAAC Team by teammate Brendan Meehan. A senior defenseman, Meehan was a First Team All-MAAC selection last season when he led the Saints with 23 caused turnovers and added 37 groundballs.

The Saints open their 2013 season tomorrow when they travel to Baltimore, Md. Siena faces fourth ranked Johns Hopkins in a 5:00 p.m. faceoff on ESPNU.
