Spartans Name Four as Captains for 2013

Castleton, Vt. It's not about me. That's the motto that Castleton Spartans has adopted heading into the 2013 season. Borrowed from the 2012 Navy football team, the Spartans have used the saying to define their motives, sacrificing individually for the good of the team.

Second year head coach Bo McDougall, his staff, and players have selected their team captains based on the idea that the greatest individual leaders would sacrifice all they had for the good of the team. The four captains for this year's squad will be seniors Nohea King, Ryan Cave, Phil Patterson, and junior Alex Green.

King finished as North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in 2011, and was named the All-Conference First Team in both 2011 and 2012. He netted 23 goals and dished off eight assists last year.

Patterson has become a staple of the Spartan midfield, scoring 16 goals and notching 12 assists in 2012. He brings unequaled intensity and enthusiasm to the practice and game field according to his coaches. Coach McDougall has high hopes for the senior this year, labeling as a potential breakout candidate for 2013.

Alex Green finished second on the Spartans in scoring last season, notching 35 goals and 12 assists. The junior was named the 2011 NACRookie of the Year, and has made significant efforts to improve his game in the offseason. "His teammates feed off his energy," said McDougall.

Cave caused 14 turnovers last season on the defensive end, scooping up 23 ground balls and has been a hard-working member of the Spartans for four years now. The senior has seen his role increase every year within the program and has become a role model for younger players.

"Their experience on the field coupled with the way they carry themselves within the campus community leaves no doubt in my mind that our players made four great choices to lead the team," said McDougall. "We had nine players nominated by their peers to serve as captain. To see each of the nine earn multiple votes from teammates is a great sign. It speaks volume of the overall leadership of this team, and the strong senior class that we have this season."

The Spartans will begin their season on Feb. 20 when they host Eastern Connecticut State.
