No. 1 Northwestern Runs by No. 14 UMass in Opener in L.A.

Northwestern's Kelly Rich led all players with four goals. Amanda Macaluso added three while three other players had two.

UMass scored its goals from four different players as Cori Murray, Tanner Guarino, Lauren Terracciano and Sam Rush all found the back of the net.

Rachel Vallarelli took the loss in goal making 10 saves. Northwestern's Bridget Bianco earned the win in goal making six saves.

Taylor Thornton put the Wildcats up 1-0 just 70 seconds into the contest. Following a Rich goal, UMass got on the board at the 14:21 mark when Courtney McGrath found Rush making the score 2-1.

The Wildcats used a four goal run over the next 10 minutes before Guarino could stop the momentum with her score with 2:37 left in the first half.

Northwestern closed the half with a three-goal strike in the final 1:09 to go up 10-2 at halftime.

The two teams traded goals to start the second half, but following Terracciano's goal at the 19:07 mark, the Wildcats held the Minutewomen scoreless for the remainder of the game. Northwestern scored five straight goals with Rich's fourth of the day closing out the game's scoring with just over four minutes left.
