Marist Lacrosse Poised for 2013 Run at MAAC Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Marist opens its 2013 season Saturday afternoon at home against Stony Brook, the defending America East Champions, in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The game, as with all six home games this season, will be broadcast live on The Red Fox Network.

Building off Last Season
The Red Foxes are looking to build off of a strong 2012 season that saw them finish with a 6-8 overall record under first year head coach Keegan Wilkinson, including nearly beating perennial powerhouse Duke on their home turf, taking a three goal lead into the fourth quarter. Marist recorded a 3-3 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), earning its third consecutive berth into the MAAC Tournament as the #4 seed.

Marist's man-up unit led the MAAC with 23 goals in 2012 and their 46% success rate on man-up opportunities not only led the conference, but ranked sixth in the country.

Five Red Foxes were named to postseason All-MAAC teams, highlighted by a First Team selection for senior defenseman Zach Badalucco (Brewster, N.Y.). Three juniors attacks Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) and defenseman Ethan Fox (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and freshman Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) were all named to the All-MAAC Second Team.

Marist will look to its veteran leadership to achieve its goal of a MAAC Championship as the Red Foxes return 14 seniors in 2013 as well as nine juniors. In all, the team returns all but two of its starters from a year ago.

Marist returns its senior duo of Rice and Doherty at the attack position. Last season the two finished 1-2 in scoring with 43 and 42 points, respectively. Rice scored 17 goals, tying for second on the team, and recorded a team-high 26 assists while finishing sixth in the MAAC with 3.07 points per game. He currently sits eighth all-time at Marist in points (145) and assists (68). Doherty led the Red Foxes with 30 goals in 2012 and finished sixth in the MAAC and 28th in the country with a 2.14 goals per game average.

Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) also returns following a freshman campaign where he scored 15 goals, the fifth-most on the team. Brendan Woods (Essex, Conn.) will look to have a strong senior season after finishing with four goals last year.

Freshmen Dillon Walker (Wawa, Pa,), Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Nick Papayanakos (Manlius, N.Y) will all look to make an immediate impact in the Red Foxes' offense.

At the midfield position, the Red Foxes will look for Nesmith to build off of his superb freshman season where he finished tied for second on the team with 17 goals, including a league-high four game-winning goals, and was fourth on the Red Foxes with 22 points, earning a spot on the All-MAAC Second Team. . He finished the season fourth amongst all freshman midfielders in the country for scoring, which helped him earn a spot on's list of Top 25 Freshman in the country.

Senior co-captain Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) will look to regain his form from two seasons ago when he was named to the All-MAAC First Team, scoring 22 goals and adding five assists. Sophomores Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) and Brett Bernardo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) both also return after registering 12 and eight points, respectively, last year as freshmen. Junior Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) got into every game last year, mostly as a defensive midfielder, causing seven turnovers and scooping 22 ground balls while also registering seven points on a goal and six assists. Senior Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) appeared in all 14 games last season, scoring four goals, including two on man-up situations, and assisted on four others.
