Royals Win Big over Wingate in Season Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Queens opened its men's lacrosse season with a 14-5 win over Wingate University at Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex. Wingate begins its season at 0-1 with the nonconference loss.

Leading the Royals today was Matthew Michael who recorded a hat trick and tallied one assists for four points. Casey Hock also recorded a hat trick, while Garrett Chan notched two goals. Nick Simonetti picked up the win in goal after collecting 11 stops.

After scoring three goals to Wingate's zero in the first quarter, Queens got hot in the second notching five to take an 8-1 lead at the half. Following the Bulldogs' man-up goal at 8:27 in the second, the Royals reeled off four in a row to close the half. Hock and Chan scored two goals apiece in the first.

The Royals continued their hot shooting in the third quarter adding five more before the end of the period. Alex Sparrow and Farkas would get Queens going scoring the first two of the third within eight seconds of each other. Queens would then find the back of the net three more times before the Bulldogs put one in the net with 21 seconds left on the clock.

Queens used their defense to hold off the Bulldogs and solidify their victory in the fourth.

The Royals outshot Wingate 45-32 and won 12 of 23 face-offs.

The Bulldogs were led by Ryan Vogrig who notched three goals. Derek Watts added two goals. Patrick Cooney took the loss in goal after collecting eight saves.

The Royals are back at home on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against LIU Post.
