Colorado College Edges Greensboro in Double Overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. Senior midfielder Charles Curtis struck for the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Colorado College an 10-9 victory in its season opener at Greensboro College on Friday afternoon.

Junior defenseman Scott Prior set up the winning possession when he forced a turnover near the Tigers' cage with 53 seconds to play. The Pride nearly regained possession with less than 20 ticks to play, but Curtis grabbed the loose ball and unleashed the deciding shot three seconds later from eight yards out.

Curtis sent the game to overtime when he scored his first goal of the contest with 6:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.

CC took an 8-6 lead after senior midfielder Steve Rijo and sophomore midfielder Henri Halle found the net late in the third period, but Greensboro tied the game when Scott Showalter scored twice in a span of 34 seconds to knot the game at 8-8.

The Pride took its final lead when James Furlow scored just 1:11 into the fourth quarter, but that was the last goal the Tigers would allow.

Freshman goaltender Chase Murphy made 16 saves in collegiate debut and Colorado College's man-down unit surrendered only one goal in 10 opportunities.

Halle led the Tigers with six ground balls, while Curtis and junior midfielder Jack Kreitler each recorded three.

Prior set a career high with three caused turnovers.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Paul also had a pair of goals for the Tigers.

Greensboro got two goals from Showalter, Alex Vander Hoff and Justin Pearson.

Mitchell Kanowicz finished with 15 saves for the Pride (0-2).

It was the first overtime victory for CC since a 9-8 triumph at Swarthmore College in the second game of 2011 campaign.

Colorado College returns to action on Sunday afternoon at Guilford College.
