No. 18 Stony Brook Dismantles Bucknell in Season Opener

Lewisburg, Pa.- Powered by 10 points from Claire Petersen and seven goals from Demmianne Cook, the No. 18/19 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team posted a 20-5 road victory to open the 2013 season Saturday at Graham Field.

Petersen's 10 points came on four goals and six assists and tied her own school record, which she notched against Vermont and Iona last season. Amber Kupres tallied a hat trick as eight different players put one in the back of the net for Stony Brook (1-0).

Franki Caridi made seven saves and allowed just three goals. Caroline O'Neill gave up 18 goals and tallied seven saves as Bucknell begins the season 0-1.

Coach Spallina's Reaction: "I am proud of the effort today. It was a very balanced win with nine different scorers and great team defense. We were sloppy at times, but we will continue to improve."

The Numbers Game

Stony Brook outshot Bucknell, 44-17, and put 30 on goal compared to 14 by the home team.

The Seawolves held a 14-13 edge in draw controls with Rubino tallying a team-high four. Arianna Sajjad notched a game-high five draw controls for the Bison.

Hillier chipped in four points on three goals and one assist.

Kupres and Hillier scooped up three ground balls apiece to help Stony Brook hold a 21-10 advantage in the statistical category.

Bucknell committed 23 turnovers with 10 being caused by the Seawolves.

Hannah Perruccio made two stops in just under nine minutes of play.

Charlotte O'Donnell gave up two goals after relieving O'Neill late in the second half.

No Bucknell player tallied more than one goal or point.

News and Notes

Stony Brook won its season opener for the second consecutive year. The Seawolves defeated edged Colgate, 13-10, to kick off the Spallina era last season.

This is the most goals scored and fewest number of goals allowed for SBU in a season opener. Stony Brook tallied 18 goals in a victory over Colgate in 2008 and gave up six en route to a 7-6 victory in its inaugural game against Long Island in 2003.
