Rutgers Late Surge Falls Short Against Air Force

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 16, 2013) Despite a late surge, Rutgers fell to Air Force, 11-9, at the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex, Saturday. The Scarlet Knights were led by freshmen A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) and M Jacob Coretti (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.), who both netted two goals. Junior A Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.) posted another five-point game, tallying a career-high five assists after opening the season with five goals against Manhattan (Feb. 10).

Rutgers, led by second-year head coach Brian Brecht, moved to 1-1 overall this season and 7-2 all-time against the Falcons (2-1). Freshman GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) put out a strong performance, notching 20 saves in the contest. Sophomore Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) was again strong in the faceoff circle, winning 14 of his 23 match-ups.

The Scarlet Knights put up the first point of the game early as junior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) recorded his first goal of the season just 1:31 into the game. Terranova tied his career-high with two points, recording a goal and an assist. The Flacons responded by scoring six of the next seven goals, and led 6-2.

Rutgers closed out the first half strong as Terranova assisted junior M Benjamin Schwing (Medford, N.J.), who put the ball past Air Force GK Austin Fox with 1:22 remaining in the second. Bieda followed that up with a goal of his own with just 18 seconds left in the half, to make the score 6-4 at the break.

Continuing where they left off at the end of the first half, the Scarlet Knights posted the first two goals of the third quarter. Sophomore M Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Coretti each found the back of the net in the first 2:16 of the half to extend RU's scoring run to 4-0 and tie the game, 6-6.

The teams went back-and-forth late and the Scarlet Knights received fourth-quarter goals by junior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.), Coretti and Bieda, who tied the game at 9-9 with 9:09 left to play. Despite the run, Air Force scored the final two goals of the game.

Rutgers next hosts Wagner on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played on the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. Led by junior Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.), the Air Force lacrosse team picked up an 11-9 victory over Rutgers Saturday afternoon at the RU Stadium Complex.

Crampton registered three goals and an assist to push the Falcons to their first victory over the Scarlet Knights since 1995. Meanwhile, Keith Dreyer (So., Malvern, Pa.) added a goal and two assists.

Rutgers (1-1) notched the first goal of the game, just over a minute and a half into the opening period. However, Air Force (2-1) responded with four straight scores, including back-to-back tallies from Crampton and the first career goal from freshman Brenden Coleman (Doylestown, Pa.) to take a 4-1 advantage with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Knights got back on the board with three seconds on the clock to bring the score to 4-2 at the end of the opening stanza.

The Falcons added goals from Marcus Walker (Jr., Denver, Colo.) and Crampton to push their margin to four goals, but Rutgers closed the first half with a pair of scores in the final 90 seconds. The Scarlet Knights continued their comeback in the third period, tallying the first two goals of the quarter to tie the score at 6-6 with 12:44 on the clock. Air Force answered with the next two scores, getting goals from Kyle Cassady (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Christopher Allen (Fr., Hillsborough, N.J.) to take an 8-6 advantage into the final period.
