Early Run Leads Colgate to Victory over Vermont

HAMILTON, N.Y. Colgate had four players tally multi-goal games to lead the Raiders to a 13-9 victory over Vermont in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. Colgate moves to 1-0 on the season, while Vermont starts out 0-1.

Colgate opened the scoring five minutes into the game with an unassisted goal from Megan Ark. Jessica Roach added a tally for Vermont four minutes later to even the score, 1-1, at the 21:15 mark. The Raiders rattled off seven straight scores over the next 19 minutes to give them an 8-1 lead with 1:48 remaining in the half. Vermont received goals from Marcie Marino, Emma Kelly and Vanessa VanderZalm in a span of 48 seconds to pull the Catamounts within four, 8-4, heading into halftime.

Roach tallied two goals and Samantha Gallerani added one early in the second half to bring Vermont within two, 9-7, at the 22:53 mark. Vermont was held scoreless over the next 16 minutes while Colgate added four straight goals to push its lead to 13-7 with 7:10 remaining in the contest. The Catamounts battled back with unassisted goals from Gallerani and Sydney Mas in the final five minutes, but were unable to overcome the deficit, eventually falling 13-9.

Charlotte Lyons made 13 saves in her first career start for Vermont while Jennie Berglin stopped eight shots to earn the win for Colgate.

Roach led Vermont with three goals and three ground balls and Gallerani added two tallies to pace the Catamounts.

Vermont hosts Marist in its season opener on February 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Virtue Field.
